Dee retired to Hilton Head Island in 2012 after teaching for 37 years, mostly in Ohio. She graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a BA Degree in Secondary Education and a double major in English and German.  While she and her husband, Ken, were on a visit to Hilton Head to buy a home, Dee checked out the library across from the realtor’s office. She could not resist finding out about The Heritage Library, a non-profit Genealogy and History Research Library. She immediately became a member.  She has volunteered as a presenter, a docent, a living history character, a script writer, a member of the education committee, and with student groups from Clemson working on oral histories. Presently, she is co-chair of the History Department.

Before Dee and her husband Ken moved to Hilton Head, they travelled extensively. Dee admits that any extra days were designed for her love of castles, libraries, author homes, and museums. A one-hour tour could turn quickly into four or more hours. Travelling is education to her, but also happiness which is why her favorite place in the world remains to be Disney World, especially if the grandchildren can join her.  Her son Brad and family live in Atlanta.

Dee loves to stay busy but when she does want to relax, soft music and a great book works best. Lately, she has been reading about Kentucky history and her Appalachian customs and roots. She loves the mountains as much as the beach.  Since teaching in the Cleveland and the Cincinnati area, she follows both the Browns and the Bengals or the Indians and the Reds.  Yes, it makes life difficult when they play each other but the game is always interesting.

Dee is a member of many organization on the island or has served on committees that promote the community.  She believes strongly in volunteerism especially when there is reflection.  She hopes that this symposium will provide each student, facilitator or organizer with valuable, individual reflection.
